the Telescopes submerge interview
I tried on two occasions to interview the Telescopes, the first time was
when I was in Birmingham they were supposed to be playing but it was
cancelled. The second time was at the Hibernian club in Fulham and that
was also cancelled so I gave up trying to do a face to face interview
and decided to do a postal interview with Stephen Lawrie.
WHEN YOU FORMED THE BAND DID YOU HAVE ANY IDEA OF THE TYPE OF SOUND YOU
WANTED ?
We formed the band because or the sound really, which generated
from just jamming together, as we progress we try and adapt it to fit
new ideas. We like to think we know the difference between cool and
crap, so that doesn't present problems.
IN AN INTERVIEW YOU SAID YOU DIDN'T HAVE MUCH OF A FOLLOWING IN YOUR
HOME TOWN, HAS THAT CHANGED SINCE YOU HAVE HAD MORE PUBLICITY ?
Yes, its
changed mainly because the shops finally started ordering our records
again, people tend not to bother us tho I dont know whether thats
because they're shy or they respect our privacy or something.
WHY DID YOUR LAST LABEL GO BUST ?
They went bust through bad management,
had attitude, laziness, excessive drug taking, bad A and R work and
sheer stupidity. We were the biggest pillocks for signing to them.
WHAT IS 'TO KILL A SLOW GIRL WALKING' ALL ABOUT ?
Its so long since that
song was written yet people still ask me that question, truthfully, it
would look too mechanical in black and white.
WOULD YOU SAY FUNK INSPIRED YOU AT ALL ?
I'm only 21, I was only seven
when punk broke out, I dont understand anything about it apart from the
fact that the Clash made a good album.
WHAT PART OF THE COUNTRY DO YOU LIKE PLAYING ?
I don't really like
England, I left when I was fifteen to live in Holland, I prefer almost
anywhere to here, I suppose I have an affinity with Newcastle-upon-tyme
as I was born there and spent my childhood there, I've got a hell of a
lot of good memories there.
WHAT BANDS AROUND AT THE MOMENT DO YOU HATE ?
Silver Chapter, Flamehead,
Whipping boy, Bark psychosis, The Fury things, The Charlatans,
Spiritualized, Teenage fan club, etc, etc
I HEARD YOU WERE DISAPPOINTED WITH THE LP, WHY WAS THAT ?
Not
disappointed , no, I love that album we had no money at all but we
achieved what we set out to do which was , make a totally spontaneous
schizophrenic collection of music, if you listen, there's great tunes
there too ,i regret we didn't have money to get a bigger studio though.
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE AMERICAN MUSIC SCENE ?
Absolutely nothing.
HOW WOULD YOU FEEL ABOUT GETTING IN THE CHARTS AND BEING ON T.O.T.P.
WITH ALL THE RUBBISH THATS ON IT ?
Thats a very cynical question , all
that's changing. I actually watch T.o.t.p these days, I like a lot of
the stuff on it, I love the remix of Tom's diner, De La soul, Soul to
Soul, Primals, Stone roses, Mondays, Charlatans, its all great music your
missing out.
